Braga owes its name to the people settled in the region between rivers Lima and Ave – the Bracari – Bracara Augusta would have been founded circa 16/15 B.C. after the Roman conquest, becoming the capital city of the Roman province of Galecia in the 4th century. The prosperous period of Pax Romana transformed the imperial city into an important commercial, judicial, religious, political and administrative centre. Such development originated the creation of some recreational structures.
The event Braga Romana occurs from the 20th until the 24th May – its main purpose is to revive those opulent Roman times – still traceable through the city spaces and proudly celebrated by its current inhabitants.
